Director of Data Engineering

We are looking for a Director of Data Engineering to lead multiple engineering teams and shape the technical direction for scalable, secure, and modern data platforms. This is a senior leadership role combining technology strategy, people management, delivery governance, and architecture oversight. The ideal candidate will have deep experience leading engineering managers and senior engineers, driving large-scale transformation, and delivering reliable platforms in complex enterprise environments.

Key Responsibilities

• Define and execute the data engineering and platform technology roadmap aligned to business priorities.
• Lead engineering managers, architects, and development teams across multiple programs.
• Establish engineering standards, governance, and delivery practices that improve predictability and quality.
• Oversee end-to-end SDLC execution across initiatives with strong attention to security, reliability, scalability, and maintainability.
• Partner closely with Product, Architecture, Business, and Executive leadership to prioritize investment and manage dependencies.
• Drive modernization initiatives across cloud-native platforms, microservices, API-first systems, event-driven architectures, DevOps, automation, and CI/CD.
• Build, mentor, and develop leaders and senior engineers while driving workforce planning, succession planning, hiring, and performance management.
• Manage delivery risks, budgets, vendors, and technology partnerships where applicable.
• Track engineering productivity, cycle time, operational excellence, and business impact.

Required Skills/Experience

• Proven experience leading large engineering organizations, preferably 50+ engineers.
• Strong background managing Engineering Managers and Technical Leads.
• Deep understanding of modern data engineering practices and enterprise platform delivery.
• Hands-on experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
• Strong knowledge of API architecture, distributed systems, SQL, and NoSQL technologies.
• Experience implementing DevOps practices, Git-based development, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Strong delivery leadership in Agile, Scrum, SAFe, or other scaled frameworks.
• Demonstrated ability to manage large programs, budgets, risks, and senior stakeholder expectations.
• Excellent executive communication and cross-functional leadership skills.
• Candidates should be able to join within 30 days; career gaps up to 6 months are acceptable.

Nice-to-have

• Exposure to AI/ML platforms and cloud transformation initiatives.
• Experience with Kubernetes, containers, and serverless architectures.
• Background in enterprise platform modernization or large-scale digital transformation.
• Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
